New BJS report lays out statistics on nonfatal criminal victimization

BJS released Criminal Victimization, 2024. This report provides official estimates of nonfatal violent crimes (rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault) and property crimes (burglary or trespassing, motor vehicle theft, and other types of household theft). It also examines the characteristics of crimes and victims, and whether crimes were reported to police. This report is the 52nd in a series that began in 1973.

New reports describe 2023 statistics on prisoners and correctional populations

BJS released Prisoners in 2023 – Statistical Tables and Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 – Statistical Tables.

Prisoners in 2023 – Statistical Tables provides counts of prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities in 2023 and includes findings on admissions, releases, and imprisonment rates. It also describes demographic and offense characteristics of state and federal prisoners, and statistics on prisoners held under military jurisdiction.

Correctional Populations in the United States, 2023 – Statistical Tables presents statistics on the total correctional population in the United States. It summarizes information on populations supervised by probation or parole agencies and those incarcerated in state or federal prisons or in the custody of local jails. The report presents statistics on the number of persons supervised by adult correctional systems from 2013 to 2023 and on their correctional status (i.e., in prison, in local jail, on probation, or on parole) and demographics.

Updated NCVS Dashboard and companion API

BJS updated the NCVS Dashboard (N-DASH), an interactive tool for examining NCVS data by victim, household, and incident characteristics.

In addition, BJS released select datasets through the NCVS Application Program Interface (API), which includes commonly used variables to support data analysis. Public-use data files were also made available for download.
