BJS releases report on violent crime incidents

BJS released Violent Incidents by Victim and Offender Age, 2023. This Just the Stats report presents findings on the age of victims and the perceived age of the offenders for violent crime incidents compared to their shares of the U.S. population for persons age 12 or older. The data used to produce the statistical estimates in this report are from BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS).

Now available: New Just the Stats report on victimizations reported to police

BJS released Reporting to Police by Type of Crime and Location of Residence, 2020–2023. This brief Just the Stats report presents findings on the percentage of violent and property victimizations reported to police by type of crime and location of residence for the aggregate period of 2020 through 2023. The data used to produce this report are from BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS).

New BJS report on deaths in federal custody

BJS released Federal Deaths in Custody and During Arrest, 2023 – Statistical Tables, the sixth report in a series in response to the Death in Custody Reporting Act (DCRA) of 2013 (P.L. 113–242). DCRA requires federal law enforcement agencies to report information about the death of any person who dies while detained, under arrest, being arrested, or in the custody of federal law enforcement officers. It describes decedent, incident, and facility characteristics of deaths in federal custody and during arrest by federal law enforcement agencies during fiscal year 2023.

Report on 2025 tribal crime data collection activities now available

BJS released Tribal Crime Data Collection Activities, 2025. This report summarizes BJS’s tribal crime data collection activities during 2024 and planned through July 2025. It also describes BJS's efforts, in consultation with Indian tribes, to develop and implement the Tribal Justice Statistics Program. These efforts include creating a 10-year strategic plan and consulting with tribal nations and federal partners on the implementation of a tribal justice data collection system to include the Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies  and the Census of Tribal Court Systems. This report is the 15th in a series that began in 2011 to meet BJS’s Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 annual reporting requirement.

New report on capital punishment now available

BJS released Capital Punishment, 2023 – Statistical Tables. This report presents statistics on prisoners who were under sentence of death in 2023 and historical trends in executions. It describes the jurisdictions that carried out executions in 2023 and includes advance counts of 2024 executions. It also presents demographic characteristics (including sex, race, ethnicity, age, education, and marital status) and the criminal history of persons under sentence of death. BJS collects information about capital punishment each year through its National Prisoner Statistics program. 

The report includes five supplemental documents, including information on the status of death penalty laws in 2023, state capital offenses, federal capital offenses, authorized methods of execution by state, and the number of prisoners executed in the United States between 1977–2024 by jurisdiction. These documents are accessible on the report’s detail page.

New report on probation and parole now available

BJS released Probation and Parole in the United States, 2023, which presents findings on persons under community supervision on probation or parole. It includes characteristics of the U.S. community supervision population such as sex, race or ethnicity, and most serious offense. The report provides statistics on movements onto and off community supervision, and details types of exits, such as completing one’s term of supervision, being incarcerated, absconding, or other unsatisfactory outcomes while in the community.  

This report is the 32nd in a series that began in 1981. Findings are based on data from BJS’s Annual Probation Survey, Annual Parole Survey, and Federal Justice Statistics Program

Capital Punishment in the United States 2022 and 2023 datasets now available 

BJS released 2022 and 2023 datasets for Capital Punishment in the United States (NPS-8) through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The NPS-8 provides annual data on prisoners under a sentence of death, as well as those who had their sentences commuted or vacated and prisoners who were executed. It collects individual-level data annually on—

  • sociodemographic characteristics of persons under sentence of death (age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, and level of education at the time of the capital offense)
  • criminal history (prior felony convictions and prior convictions for criminal homicide and legal status at the time of the capital offense)
  • date of death sentence and status of death sentence at yearend
  • date and method of removal from under sentence of death.
