Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $50,000)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

Under this award the Utah SAC will: (1) obtain statewide data on deaths occurring in the process of arrest or in pursuit of arrest pursuant to the Deaths in Custody Reporting Act of 2000 (Pub. L. 106-297); (2) research and compile data on the prevalence of dating violence in Utah; and, (3) conduct a study on statewide gang violence involving juveniles. Findings from all the projects will be presented to BJS and published for state agencies to use in gaining a better understanding of the extent and magnitude of gang and dating violence in the state.
