Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $634,855)

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will use FY22 NCHIP funds for 4 projects. The first project is to support two FTE positions for processing increasing criminal arrests and civil background check requests. These two FTE’s are responsible for handling this increase, while also dealing with an increase in workload as it pertains to collecting and reporting NICS information from local and mental health boards. The second project will purchase 11 Livescans for local law enforcement agencies in SD that are currently using Livescan equipment that has reached ‘end of life’ and will no longer be supported by the state network or NGI system requirements. SD DCI will be able to process, retain, and submit criminal arrest records, making them readily accessible to III and NICS queries. The third project will use funds to hire a contractor to manually enter missing dispositions into the state's criminal history repository. Currently, there are over 10,000 missing dispositions that need to be updated and reported. The fourth project will use funds to purchase software that streamlines the collection of biometric samples from jails and sheriff’s offices to SD DCI. The STACS database tracking system software will result in increased productivity, a reduction in errors due to manually entry, and improved data quality and compliance with reporting requirements.
