This codebook presents the variables and coding information for the data set which gives the names, addresses, inmate populations, number of female inmates, institution types, and funding sources for about 3,500 local jails contained in the National Justice Agency list.
Abstract
The introduction describes the study and discusses data collection procedures, file structure, data standards, and codebook information. Most of the facilities surveyed are administered by county governments. A jail is included as a separate facility if it is administered by a local government authority, used to hold persons detained before adjudication or after adjudication for sentences of a year or less, intended mainly for adults, and in a separate physical location or functionally distinct from another facility at the same location. The data are available in two formats: a card-image file and an OSIRIS data set. An appendix, which explains the classification of governmental units, and a glossary are included.
