Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $131,971)
The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the states to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, located within the South Dakota Office of the Attorney General, will use NCHIP funds to: 1) continue to support staff efforts to maintain timely, accurate, and complete criminal history records at the state repository and 2) redesign the Unified Judicial System's current Protection Order module to support a seamless transition to and ensure compatibility with the state's new Odyssey case management system, which will enable the continued transmission of protection order data to state and federal systems.
