Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $58,374)

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the States to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.

Under this grant, the Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) will conduct the following NCHIP activities to improve the quality of the state's criminal records and criminal record systems: (1) automate the interface between the record repository and the courts; (2) ensure records of all criminal events that start with an arrest are included in the database; (3) reduce any backlog of missing dispositions; (4) upgrade equipment; and (5) synchronize records between the state and FBI in order to provide full disposition reporting via the Interstate Identification Index (III).
