Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $50,152)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data.

The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

Under this award, the Nevada SAC will use funds to implement a statewide data collection effort to obtain information regarding deaths that occurred during the course of an arrest by local law enforcement agencies in Nevada. The goal of this project will be to establish a long term reporting process that will improve the collection of data provided to BJS for the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program. Since 2003, law enforcement agencies in Nevada who are under no obligation to submit, have not provided information regarding arrest-related deaths in custody. A survey will be conducted to identify those appropriate individuals within organizations and an email survey will be used to collect the records.
