Under this award, the Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI) will carry out the State Court Processing Statistics Redesign project. The SCPS redesign will build on the prior work BJS has done regarding criminal case processing in state courts. The project has several major objectives. These include redesigning the SCPS data collection instrument so that more pertinent and relevant information on pretrial release and misconduct can be collected; developing various sampling methodologies and frameworks for producing different kinds of estimates of felony case processing in state courts; developing and testing modular enhancements capable of allowing for the localized assessment of felony case processing; developing statistical models for assessing the reliability of sampling frameworks; and developing procedures that minimize data collection costs.
