Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $49,975)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the West Virginia SAC will conduct the following activities: 1) produce a report for BJS on deaths in police custody through coordination with the Chief Medical Examiner of the state to obtain information on each death; and 2) conduct an impact evaluation of the juvenile justice delinquency prevention program entitled, "The HOPE School-Based Mentoring Program." The evaluation will examine whether the program affects delinquency and/or antisocial behavior, improves school performance, and enhances prosocial attitudes. This impact evaluation builds upon the process evaluation previously funded by BJS.
