WV 2008 SJS Application

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

Under this award, the West Virginia SAC intends to conduct the following activities: 1) obtain information on each death in police custody and produce a report for BJS through coordination with the Chief Medical Examiner of the state; and 2) conduct research on select diversion and length of stay reduction initiatives to provide the Governor's Commission on Prison Overcrowding with empirical information to alleviate the prison overcrowding situation.
