New BJS reports detail NIBRS and NCVS statistics to present a fuller picture of crime in the U.S.
BJS released two reports that provide statistics on violent and property crime in the United States in 2023 using law enforcement-reported and survey-based data.
- Crime Known to Law Enforcement, 2023 details estimates of violent and property crime in the United States based on offenses reported by law enforcement agencies from 2022 to 2023. The report presents national and subnational estimates of crime offenses and victimizations. Findings are based on BJS’s and the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Estimation Program.
- The National Crime Victimization Survey and National Incident-Based Reporting System: A Complementary Picture of Crime in 2023 describes the similarities and differences between crime data collected in BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The report compares key statistical estimates for 2022 and 2023 between the two data collections.
BJS releases report on model-based techniques to produce estimates of state-level victimization rates
BJS released Bayesian Estimation of State-Level Crime Victimization Rates. This BJS-funded report highlights the results from applying the multivariate lognormal model using the NCVS and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program to produce state-level estimates of criminal victimization.
BJS launches Survey of Prison Inmates Crosswalk
BJS launched the Survey of Prison Inmates Crosswalk, an interactive tool that allows users to easily identify topics and questions from the Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI). Thanks to this tool, users can map questions asked in the 2016 iteration of the SPI to those asked in the 1997 and 2004 surveys.
