Read about BJS activities to establish and enhance tribal crime data collection
BJS released Tribal Crime Data Collection Activities, 2024, the 14th in a series that began in 2011 to meet its Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 annual reporting requirement. This report summarizes BJS’s tribal crime data collection activities from August 2023 to July 2024 and describes BJS's efforts, in consultation with Indian tribes, to develop and implement the Tribal Justice Statistics Program. These efforts include creating a 10-year strategic plan and consulting with tribal nations and federal partners on the implementation of a tribal justice data collection system for the 2024 Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies and 2024 Census of Tribal Court Systems.
New report details statistics on crime and safety in schools
BJS and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2023. This report provides a compilation of key findings on school crime and safety from a variety of data sources, including national surveys of students, teachers, principals, and postsecondary institutions. It presents indicators on elementary and secondary student and teacher victimizations; the school environment; fights and weapons; safety, security, and mental health practices; and postsecondary campus safety and security.
Indicator 2: Incidence of Nonfatal Victimization at School and Away From School includes data from BJS’s National Crime Victimization Survey and is available on the BJS website. All 23 indicators can be found on the Condition of Education page at the NCES website.
New report presents statistics on sexual victimization in adult correctional facilities
BJS released Sexual Victimization Reported by Adult Correctional Authorities, 2019–2020 – Statistical Tables. This report provides counts and rates of allegations of inmate-on-inmate and staff-on-inmate sexual victimization across all types of adult correctional facilities. In contrast to prior reports, allegations and substantiated incidents of inmate-on-inmate sexual harassment are presented together with data for other types of sexual victimization. This reporting change makes it easier to present trends across these victimization types and better aligns with future data collections.
Findings in this report are based on the Survey of Sexual Victimization (SSV), which BJS has conducted annually since 2004. The SSV is among the data collections that BJS conducts to meet the requirements of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108–79).
Submit comments on BJS’s 2024 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics survey
BJS seeks comments on the reinstatement, with change, of a previously approved collection: 2024 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey. This year’s survey has been revised to help reduce burden and increase clarity.
The LEMAS survey is conducted every 3 to 4 years and is currently based on a nationally representative sample of approximately 3,500 general-purpose law enforcement agencies (LEAs). LEMAS survey results are used to produce national estimates on a wide range of critical topics related to LEAs.

Public comments requested on the currently approved data collection on state correctional systems
BJS encourages comments on the extension of a currently approved collection, the National Corrections Reporting Program (NCRP). The NCRP is the only national data collection furnishing annual individual-level information about state prisoners at five points in the incarceration process: prison admission, prison release, annual year-end prison custody census, entry to post-custody community corrections supervision, and exit from post-custody community corrections supervision.
