Since its inception in 1970, the Texas Department of Public Safety's Computerized Criminal History (CCH) file has served as the principal repository of arrest, disposition, custody, and supervision data for individuals arrested in Texas, and the CCH is being linked to the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS).
Abstract

With an implementation date of January 1993, the CJIS has far-reaching implications for local agencies, for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (DCJ). The basic design of the CJIS form is a fingerprint card attached to a multipart NCR-type form. The arresting agency reports identification and arrest data on the fingerprint card and the arrest sheet from the multipart form. Remaining sheets of the form are then passed to the prosecutor or court for completion of prosecution data elements. Efforts are underway to link the CCH and the CJIS, with DPS and DCJ participation. Technical details of the CJIS are provided, and strategic goals of the CJIS as a criminal records data base are identified. References, tables, and figures
