Victimization rates remained stable for most offenses measured by the National Crime Survey (NCS) in 1980, except for declines (between 1979 and 1980) in three crimes: assault, personal larceny without victim-offender contact, and household larceny.
Abstract
The proportions of crimes that victims reported to the police increased. The 1980 NCS victimization rate for rape was 1.6 per 1,000, a figure that has not changed significantly since 1973. In 1980, personal robberies occurred at a rate of about 7 per 1,000 persons, and some 57 percent of the victimizations were made known to the police. The victimization rate for assault dropped by 6 percent between 1979 and 1980. The NCS victimization rate for motor vehicle theft did not change significantly between 1979 and 1980, but the 1980 rate was appreciably lower than the 1973 figure. Changes in data collection methods which NCS implemented in 1980 are delineated. Four tables and two figures are supplied.
