This 1984 edition provides data on the nation's death row population and on the legal status of death penalty laws.
Abstract

Death row counts are for the last day of the calendar year. Demographic data on death row inmates cover age, sex, race and ethnicity, marital status at the time of imprisonment, education, and State and region of incarceration. Inmate criminal history information includes prior felony convictions, prior convictions for homicide, and the criminal justice status of the offenders at the time of the capital offense. Criminal justice data encompass the capital offense; the time spent on death row; and for those removed from death row, the removal method and status at year's end. Also reported are data on capital punishment statutory changes in each jurisdiction and execution methods. 12 tables and appended 1980-1984 data.
