This report summarizes Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) programs and activities for fiscal year 1988 and presents the latest statistical information on a variety of criminal justice topics.
Abstract

BJS has the statutory responsibility to collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate statistics on crime, crime victims, criminal offenders, and justice system operations at all governmental levels; to provide financial and technical support to State statistical and operating agencies; to analyze national information policy on the privacy and security of criminal justice data; and to provide information on crime and justice to the President, the Congress, the judiciary, State and local governments, the public, and the media. The introduction to this annual report provides information on BJS data collection and analysis, BJS publications, and BJS clearinghouses and report distribution. The main body of the report describes BJS activities in the areas of crime and its characteristics; drugs; crime costs; public response to crime; adjudication and sentencing; corrections; Federal justice data; privacy, security, and confidentiality of criminal justice data and criminal histories; and new initiatives. A State-by-State summary of the activities of State Statistical Analysis Centers (SAC'S) is also provided. Appended SAC names and addresses, BJS 1988 reports, and source notes
