Direct Estimation Methods and the National Crime Victimization Survey

This webinar provided an overview of methods for calculating variance of estimates from complex sample designs, including direct and indirect methods. It focused on two methods for calculating direct variance estimates: Taylor series linearization (TSL) and balanced repeated replication (BRR). The panel used SAS and SPSS to demonstrate the methods with examples using data from the National Crime Victimization Survey.

She discusses the four missing data codes used in the NCVS: residue, out of universe, item invalid until, and item invalid after. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) Knowledge Corner provides quick tips and explanations for NCVS data users on a variety of topics. In this video, BJS Statistician Susannah Tapp, PhD, looks at person and household noninterviews in the NCVS. Household noninterviews occur when no one from a selected household participates in the NCVS. There are three types of household noninterviews – Type A, Type B, and Type C.
