Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $1,599,925)
Through the BJS Analytic Resource Center (BJS-ARC) project, BJS aims to undertake and complete methodological research that will complement its routine collection and reporting of criminal justice system statistics under its Criminal Justice Statistics Program (CJSP). Through its CJSP, BJS develops and disseminates statistics that describes the operations of the criminal justice system; the attributes of law enforcement, prosecution, judicial, and correctional agencies at the federal, state and local levels; and undertakes special projects to develop new statistical collections and methodologies.
The work of the BJS-ARC will focus on three areas: (1) Expand BJS' use of administrative records; (2) assist BJS in implementing new sampling and survey methodologies such as continuous data collection to enhance the timeliness of release of BJS statistics; and (3) enhance the utility of BJS data though records linkage to produce topical reports.
The BJS-ARC is intended to provide analytic services to BJS in these areas that will both supplement the work of BJS' staff and expand BJS' capacity to develop and implement new methodologies. The BJS-ARC is designed to serve needs in several BJS units and the projects to be undertaken cover a range of topics, including those related to implementing and testing new sampling methods (for continuous collection of data about police organizations), to those requiring assessments of booking data, to linking existing BJS data for the purposes of publishing reports to demonstrate the utility of BJS data.
