Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $52,094)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.

The Mississippi Statistical Analysis Center (SAC), at the Administration of Justice Department of the University of Mississippi, proposes to enhance the statewide collection process and quality of data regarding deaths in custody. Presently, the Mississippi Department of Corrections and jail facilities gather data on custodial deaths within the state. The SAC intends to establish a system of cooperation, open communication, and regular reporting among parties throughout the state at various levels of government to capture data not previously reported. This project is not a one-time initiative but is intended to serve as the basis for an ongoing data collection effort.
