The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the state, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states.
Under this award, the Maine Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) plans to analyze sentencing and sex offender data to assist the Maine Legislature and Sentencing and Corrections Coordinating Council in fulfilling the specific charge of monitoring state sentencing practices, and reviewing ongoing data collection in consultation with research organizations and universities to make informed decisions regarding sentencing and sex offense practices and policies. Findings will be published in the Maine Sentencing Report and a briefing book on sex offenders in Maine will also be prepared.
