Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $50,000)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Virginia Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) will use funds to continue collection and reporting of statewide deaths in custody data; and conduct research using incident-based reporting data (IBR). The research using IBR data is a continuation of project initiated in 1998, and is directed at developing analytical reports for both consumers of the data (the SAC) and contributors (local law enforcement and the State Police). The intention of this ongoing project is to demonstrate the advantages of using IBR data in place of summary Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data.
