Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $47,288)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through the collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the West Virginia SAC intends to: 1) produce a report for BJS on deaths in police custody through coordination with the Chief Medical Examiner of the state to obtain information on each death; and 2) conduct a program review of the quality and effectiveness of a juvenile justice delinquency prevention program. Continued support for the stated-funded program is contingent upon demonstrating performance, and the evaluation is a high priority of the Governor of West Virginia.
