The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Iowa SAC will fund the following activities to enhance the abilities of state and local policy makers to develop, access, understand and utilize data on justice issues of relevance: 1) carry out the research necessary to develop a forecast of Iowa's prison population and maintain an objective methodology for simulating alternative corrections futures based on specific changes in laws, policies or practices; 2) continue to maintain and update data and analytical information for state, local, and federal agencies on the website; and 3) provide timely and accurate data on deaths in custody to BJS.
