Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $49,816)

The State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The SJS Program provides support to each State to coordinate and conduct statistical activities within the State, conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve as a liaison in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their States.

Under this award, the Wisconsin Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) will improve the process of collecting, accessing, and reporting incident-based reporting (IBR) crime data that is compatible with the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The SAC will create a monthly NIBRS submission confirmation report detailing totals for each offense reported by each law enforcement agency where discrepancies in data submissions could be identified and resolved quickly. In addition to resolving discrepancies sooner, annual reports could be generated much faster and without waiting for a year's worth of numbers to be validated. The SAC will also create a time period comparison report for IBR data. Additionally, the SAC will develop a separate integrated database for IBR and Uniform Crime Report (UCR) data to provide more timely topical reports by eliminating the manual processing.
