Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $83,438)

The Idaho Statistical Analysis Center (ISAC) requests funds to conduct a NIBRS-focused study of school-based law enforcement in Idaho. ISAC will utilize data from the Idaho Incident-Based Reporting System (IIBRS; Idaho’s state NIBRS repository), supplemented with data on school disciplinary actions and a stakeholder survey, to compare schools with access to a school resource officer (SRO) to those without access to an SRO on several characteristics including offense rates, school disciplinary actions, and the primary role of SROs on campus. The study will provide the stakeholders that comprise a state-level SRO working group (Idaho State Board of Education, Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections, and Idaho Office of Drug Policy) with an in-depth look at the prevalence and effect of SROs around Idaho. The study will also incorporate an assessment of the utility of NIBRS data to study school-based crime and its relationship to disciplinary actions and law enforcement presence on campus. Study results will be published in a technical report that will be available to all interested stakeholders and the general public.
