Now hiring: BJS Statisticians (Social Science)

BJS is seeking multiple Statisticians (Social Science GS-1530-13/14). 
Job duties include—

  • Assessing the feasibility of establishing new statistical programs or modifying existing programs to incorporate new data collections
  • Designing and managing one or more complex statistical data series or major components of a large-scale data series, which may include single or multi-year, local or national data collections on topics such as state and federal prisoner characteristics, policy agency activities, state and federal court processing activities, and the experiences of victims of crime
  • Planning and developing data collection methods, developing questions and survey instruments, designing the sample, negotiating with collection agents and respondents, formulating data processing specifications, monitoring all phases of the project, identifying and resolving technical and operational problems, evaluating collected information, and preparing documentation of final data for public release
  • Providing statistical policy and procedural consultation, advice, and guidance on complex scientific and criminal justice issues in a statistical area related to government functions
  • Analyzing a variety of data sets using appropriate statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R.
