BJS released its publications list for calendar year 2025.
Access new statistics on time served in state prisons
BJS released Time Served in State Prison, 2018 – Supplemental Tables. The original report presents findings on the time served by individuals released from state prison in 2018 by most serious offense, describing the mean and median length of time served by most serious offense and the percentage of sentence served by offense before initial release from state prison. These supplemental tables add kidnapping, extortion, and arson to tables from the original report. All findings are based on data from BJS’s National Corrections Reporting Program, which is an annual voluntary data collection of administrative records submitted by state departments of corrections on topics including individual prisoners under correctional supervision.
Access statistics on juveniles in adult criminal courts in 2014
BJS released Juveniles Charged in Adult Criminal Courts, 2014. Using data from the Survey of Juveniles Charged in Adult Criminal Courts, which BJS conducted with support from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, this report examines data from 23 states where juveniles (defined as persons ages 12 to 17) were charged in adult criminal courts between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014. Focusing on the 23,553 cases where the most serious charge was known at arrest and case disposition, the report covers cases filed in adult criminal courts against juveniles at several stages throughout the court process, including the most serious charge at arrest, method of disposition, case outcome, and sentencing. It also presents statistics on the demographic characteristics of these juveniles.
BJS released Human Trafficking Prevalence Estimation Feasibility Study. This third-party report presents findings from an environmental scan of international and domestic studies that estimate the size of the human trafficking victim population in the United States. It also summarizes panel discussions by subject-matter experts, BJS and National Institute of Justice representatives, and Abt Global team members on trafficking type, geography, methodology, and data access and quality. Based on findings from the environmental scan and panel discussions, the team recommends a pilot study to test the feasibility of estimating the prevalence of human trafficking in the United States.
Access datasets on sexual victimization in adult correctional facilities
BJS released the Survey of Sexual Victimization in Adult Correctional Facilities 2016–2020 datasets through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The Survey of Sexual Victimization (SSV) is part of BJS's National Prison Rape Statistics Program, which gathers mandated data on the incidence and prevalence of sexual victimization in adult correctional and juvenile justice facilities under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108–79).
The SSV is an administrative data collection based on allegations and substantiated incidents of sexual victimization by other inmates or staff that are reported to authorities. This collection includes summary-level data on allegations and substantiated incidents reported to all state prisons; the federal prison system; facilities operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; facilities operated by the U.S. military; and data collected from representative samples of jail jurisdictions, privately operated adult prisons and jails, and facilities in Indian country.
