Abstract
Summarizes basic points that law enforcement officials should consider in deciding whether to survey the public. This 24-page guide accompanies the Crime Victimization Survey Software developed by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. It suggests how surveys have been used to improve policing services. It introduces readers to identifying survey goals. After providing a primer of sampling, the guide touches on survey administration and analysis. Appendixes list terminology, costs, and further reading.
