Information from questionnaires completed by all locally administered jails in 15 southern states and the District of Columbia were used to compile these statistical tables showing inmate populations, facility characteristics, and other information for fiscal year 1988.
Abstract

The data cover the facilities in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. They also show inmate characteristics, the housing of Federal and State prisoners in jails, population movement between July 1987 and June 1988, jail capacities, inmate deaths, and the ages and planned changes in jail facilities. Other tables show the number and types of jail payroll and nonpayroll employees, the number of jail inmates per employee by staff occupation, correctional expenditures, participation in work release and weekend sentence programs, community service programs, other alternatives to institutionalization, and medical facilities in jails.
