Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $171,080)

The goal of the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) is to improve the Nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information and by insuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems. BJS provides direct financial and technical assistance to the states to improve criminal history and other related records and to build their infrastructure to connect to national record check systems both to supply information and to conduct the requisite checks.
Under this award, the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) will use funds to continue past efforts to enhance the accuracy and quality of criminal history records maintained in the state and transmitted to the FBI. Specifically, funds will be used to: 1) modify the current data exchange model between DPS and the Iowa Courts to enable real time reporting of disposition data from the courts to DPS; and 2) synchronize records in the state and Interstate Identification Index (III) to ensure records are properly associated with FBI records and available through III.
