The CPO will collect basic operational and staffing information from more than 2,330 prosecutor offices in the U.S. Prosecutor offices operate at the county , district , or circuit level. The main purpose of the CPO is to collect key statistics about all prosecutor offices currently operating in the U.S. A secondary purpose of the CPO is to construct and validate a reliable frame for future survey iterations of the National Survey of Prosecutors.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will administer the 2023 2026 Firearm Inquiry Statistics (FIST) program. The goal of fist is to provide national estimates on the total number of firearm purchase applications received and denied pursuant to the Brady Act and relevant state laws. FIST collects counts of firearm transfer applications and permit checks conducted by state and local checking agencies and combines them with the FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) transaction data.

This program aims to improve the nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information; and by ensuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non criminal justice background check systems.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will conduct the 2023 Census of Publicly Funded Forensic Crime Laboratories, following the data collection last conducted for 2020. The goal of this collection is to obtain updated information about the staffing, resources, workload, policies, and procedures of all publicly funded forensic crime laboratories in the U.S. The main activities for the project include survey design, frame development and maintenance, administering the census, and delivery of datasets.

OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and racial equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety and protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. This supplement will fund the final two years of the 5 year award for collection of National Corrections Reporting Program (NCRP) and National Prisoner Statistics Program (NPS) data.

BJS is seeking applications for administering the Survey of State Parole Agencies on Reentry Services (SSPARS). The SSPARS will generate national and state level statistics on the types of treatment programs, housing and education assistance, and other reentry services received by adults under supervision by the 50 state parole agencies and the District of Columbia.

This program furthers the DOJ's mission to reduce violent crime and address gun violence by improving the accuracy, utility, and interstate accessibility of criminal history and related records in support of national record systems and their use for name and fingerprint based criminal history background checks. This program was developed to implement Title III, Division B (3) Appropriations outlined in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (Pub. L. 117 159).

This program will support activities under the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP), the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Act Record Improvement Program (NARIP), and portions of the recently enacted Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (Pub. L. 117 159) in fiscal year (FY) 2023.

The purpose of the project funded through this solicitation is to use the Rapid Deployment Model (RDM) strategy to help three of the largest agencies in the state of California the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office (LASO) transition to reporting crime data to the FBI's National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). This project will support the California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) to work with SFPD, LAPD, and LASO to make them compliant with the crime data reporting requirements in the state.

This program seeks to evaluate the current state and availability of data sources to measure community initiated and officer initiated events, including calls for service, to law enforcement. The work will examine the use of 911 services compared to police dispatch repositories, data pooled by vendors supplying computer aided dispatch (CAD) systems to law enforcement and public safety agencies, and data available on third party vendor sites and through public open data portal(s). The information gathering will also examine any legal constraints impacting access to these data.

The program seeks support to conduct the 2022 Census of Public Defender Offices (CPDO). BJS has conducted one iteration of data collection with public defender offices and will update that collection with this solicitation. The census will obtain information about the operations, workload, staff size, policies, and procedures of the approximately 1,000 offices that serve as public defender offices across the nation.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is publishing this notice to announce the Technical Assistance Program to support activities under the State Justice Statistics Program for Statistical Analysis Centers (SJS SAC) in FY 2022. The SJS SAC program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to coordinate statistical activities in the state, conduct research on relevant criminal justice issues, and serve as a liaison to help BJS gather data from state agencies.

The Census of State Courts (CSC) is a new collection for the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). The CSC is intended to provide a complete census of all state and local courts operational in the United States, and to compile important staffing data and information about the case types heard in state municipal, trial, and appellate courts. This census serves as foundational work to build a universe frame for municipal, limited and general jurisdiction, and appellate courts. Thus, this collection will serve as a universe frame for future surveys of state courts.

The main objectives of this project are to conduct research on the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails (SILJ) instrument and sampling design and to create and pilot test a revised instrument and sampling method for the next iteration of the survey collection. BJS plans to conduct a pretest of the revised SILJ which includes changes to address current issues of the local jail population, the need to make SILJ comparable to other federal instruments, a test of a version for Spanish-speaking individuals, and to reduce the burden on respondents.

The National Prison Rape Statistics Program (NPRSP), developed upon passage of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, entails the collection of both administrative and self report data on sexual violence from State and Federal prisons, locally operated jails, and public and private facilities for juvenile offenders in the nation. The National Inmate Survey (NIS) is one of the data collections developed under the NPRSP.

The National Pretrial Reporting Program (NPRP) series compiles information on criminal justice processing of persons charged with felony offenses in state courts, with particular attention to pretrial release and detention. The NPRP will leverage improvements in court and justice agency computerized case management systems to collect the data. BJS would also like to collect data that is nationally representative rather than using the historical largest urban areas model.

This program seeks to conduct the 2024 Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies (CTLEA 24) and 2024 Census of Tribal Court Systems (CTCS 24). The CTLEA 24 collects data on tribal law enforcement agencies, including jurisdiction, staffing, budget, calls for service and arrests, agency functions, and officer training and duties. The CTCS 24 collects data on tribal courts, including jurisdiction, staffing, budget, types of courts and caseloads, prosecutors and public defenders, and programs or services.

This program seeks support to conduct the 2023 Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices (CMEC). This will be the third census BJS has conducted on this topic and follows the 2018 CMEC. The goal of this data collection is to obtain updated information about the operations, workload, staffing, training, policies and procedures of all publicly funded medical examiner and coroner (ME C) offices responsible for providing medicolegal death investigation (MDI).

This program provides grants to assist states, state court systems and tribal governments in updating the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) with certain mental health, protection and restraining order, domestic violence conviction, and other criminal history record information which may disqualify individuals from purchasing or possessing firearms.

This program aims to improve the nation's safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal history record information; and by ensuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non criminal justice background check systems.

This program enhances state Statistical Analysis Centers' (SACs) capabilities to collect, analyze, and publish statistical data that support the states' strategic criminal justice planning needs and BJS and national priorities. The information produced by SACs and their involvement in criminal justice projects is critical to federal, state, and local criminal justice agencies and community organizations as they develop programs and policies related to crime, illegal drugs, victim services, and the administration of justice.
