The U.S. Department of Justice administers two statistical programs to measure the magnitude, nature, and impact of crime in the nation: the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). These data collections together provide a comprehensive understanding of crime in the United States. This webinar provided an overview of what information is collected and how it is obtained for each data collection, including the similarities and differences between the NCVS and NIBRS.

The Survey of Prison Inmates Data Analysis Tool (SPI DAT) is a dynamic analysis tool that modernizes public access to the most recent SPI data (2016) with interactive visualizations. This video provides instructions on how to navigate through the tool.

BJS hosted an informational webinar on the Access to Justice Design and Testing Program on July 14, 2023. This webinar allowed potential applicants to ask questions about the new program. BJS walked through the solicitation (see webinar presentation) and answered questions submitted in the Q&A. These questions and answers can be found in the webinar transcript.

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) Knowledge Corner provides quick tips and explanations for NCVS data users on a variety of topics. In this video, BJS Statistician Emilie Coen, DrPH, covers the NCVS instruments and their role in the interview process. She includes descriptions of the NCVS Control Card, basic screen questionnaire, and the crime incident report. She also provides a brief overview of the content of the instruments and additional resources on the instruments.

This webinar provides updates on BJS’s efforts to redesign the entire National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) instrument. Presenters describe additional findings from a large-scale national field test of the NCVS Instrument Redesign, specifically the improvement of victimization measures in the new survey instrument, and the performance of two new periodic modules.
